About the Columbus Avenue Redesign:
The city-led project includes the first bicycle lanes in the City of Anderson, and also one of the largest in-house projects executed by the city, saving approximately $60,000. Columbus Avenue was recently repaved by E&B Paving, then treated with SealMaster for durability. After the Madison County Council of Governments issued a bike lane study for Columbus Avenue, Michael Farmer, City of Anderson Director of Engineering Services, drafted the implemented road design. The city's first bicycle lanes have been added to both sides of Columbus Avenue extending from 32nd to 53rd streets. Travel lanes from 32nd to 38th Streets previously consisted of four 12 ft. lanes. This section now consists of a 12 ft. left-turn lane, two vehicular 10 ft. lanes, and 6 ft. bicycle lanes on each side. Travel lanes from 38th to 53rd Streets were previously 12 ft. travel lanes and one 14 ft. turn lane. This section now consists of 10 ft. travel lanes, a 10 ft. left-turn lane, and 4 ft. bicycle lanes on each side. The City projects to extend the bicycle lanes into downtown Anderson as part of future projects.
